I love first grade!
For those of you who don't know, I have an internship in a first grade class. I will start my student teaching in this class on Monday. I love my job sooo much! I come home laughing almost every day. So this past week I was reading a book about a baby kangaroo with one of the reading groups (the group consisted of 3 boys and 1 girl). In this book it was talking about how the baby liked to stay in its mom's pouch and it would drink milk in there. One of the boys said, "That is sooooo gross that kangaroos can drink milk from their mom's that is soooooo weird!" And the little girl quickly replied, "That's not weird, my baby sister drinks milk from my mom." I quickly tried to change the subject but it didn't work. The boy asked the girl where her sister got the milk from. She quickly replied, "Well, she sucks on the tips of my mom's privates." I quickly took over the conversation and said that all mammal (the students have learned what a mammal is) mothers can feed their babies milk from their own bodies. I pulled out a book that we had read a few days before about how milk comes from a cow. I showed the kids a picture of the cow udders and explained that we can drink milk that is squeezed from the udders or baby cows can drink milk from the cow. To which the same little boy replied, "Oh, so if I squeeze my privates, will milk come out?" I quickly said no...thinking how did cows turn to little boy privates so quickly....he quickly, replied, "Why not, they look the same." I told him it was just different, to which he again said they looked the same. I couldn't think of anything to say, so I just said, "Well look at this cow, do they have to cover up their udders?" The boy said, "no". So I said, "So their udders are not private that's why it's different." He had a look of relief and said, "Oh okay." And that was the end of our conversation. I've been laughing about it for days though! I love first grade! They definitely keep me on my toes!!!
